Predicting Human Liver Damage With A More Accurate In Vitro Hepatotoxicity Assay

Before a drug reaches the market, it undergoes stringent testing to confirm its safety and efficacy. Yet, many standard safety tests often rely on animal models, both rodent and non-rodent, which cannot always forecast which drug candidates may cause drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in humans. This study explores whether a species-specific, multicellular, in vitro hepatotoxicity assays utilizing Liver-Chips can provide a greater understanding of hepatotoxicity mechanisms than traditional animal models, potentially leading to a reduction in the number of animal studies needed to provide an accurate risk assessment for drug candidates.
