Cryopreservation is essential for cell therapy, enabling long-term storage of cells and maintaining their functionality post-thaw. Traditionally, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is used as a cryoprotectant due to its efficiency. However, DMSO can cause toxic side effects, which complicates its use in therapies designed for patient administration. To address these concerns, researchers are exploring DMSO-free alternatives to improve cell therapy safety. Nucleus Biologics developed NB-KUL™ DF, a DMSO-free, chemically defined cryopreservation medium designed to maintain cell viability and functionality after thawing, without the toxic effects of DMSO. This formula supports multiple human cell types commonly used in cell and gene therapies.

In testing, NB-KUL™ DF showed performance comparable to traditional cryoprotectants like CryoStor® CS5 for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and T cells. Although slightly less effective for natural killer (NK) cells, NB-KUL™ DF still demonstrated superior results compared to CryoStor® CSB, underscoring the importance of selecting tailored cryopreservation solutions for different cell types.

Explore how the QuickStart Media program by Nucleus Biologics provides additional customization options, allowing researchers to adapt the NB-KUL™ DF formula to specific cell therapy needs. This flexibility in media formulation enables scientists to optimize cryopreservation processes, enhancing therapeutic safety and efficacy. This white paper concludes that NB-KUL™ DF is a promising foundation for safe, effective cryopreservation, particularly when customized to meet the unique demands of diverse cell therapies.
