Visible Genetics Inc.
A core technology used by Visible Genetics is the application of manufacturing methods and principles used in the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) industry but applied to biotechnology. The result is the OpenGene™ automated DNA sequencing system and MicroCel™ disposable cassette.
The OpenGene™ system consists of the following:
- MicroGene Clipper™ and Long-Read Tower™ automated DNA sequencers
- MicroCel™ disposable cassette
- Gel Toaster™ polymerizing unit
- GeneObjects™ DNA analysis software
- GeneKit™ and TRUGENE™ gene specific kits
Genetic testing for treatable diseases such as cancer, for
infectious pathogens and for tissue-typing require "sequencing" or reading the DNA code in genes. DNA sequencing can 'read' any DNA sequence and differs from PCR probe-based genetic testing which is based on identification of known DNA sequences. This fact makes probe-based tests much less useful than sequencing in the molecular diagnosis of many treatable diseases in which the occurance of unpredictable mutations is the norm.
The molecular testing market for genetic disease is projected to grow to over US$2 billion by the year 2001.
Existing automated sequencers are costly and require long periods of time to prepare gels and to run sequences. The OpenGene™ system sequences as fast as 300 bases in ~30 minutes and as long as ~700 bases in 4 hours, and is marketed at an affordable price. In addition, GeneObjects software is designed to meet the specific needs of molecular diagnostic, clinical testing and research laboratories.
Visible Genetics has developed kits for RB1 (retinoblastoma), p53 (cancers), HLA typing and HIV genotyping. Other tests currently under development by Visible Genetics include Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B and M. tuberculosis genotyping.
