Virus Filtration In Continuous Processing: Novel Approaches For Optimal Performance

Unlike batch operations that typically operate under constant pressure or high flux, virus filtration in continuous processes may function at very low flux, potentially compromising the filter's viral retention performance. To address this limitation, two innovative approaches have been developed. The first involves intermittent high flux operation, while the second employs serial virus filtration, with a high area ratio between the first- and second-stage filters. Both theoretical models and experimental studies demonstrate that these techniques ensure reliable virus retention, enhance filter productivity, and extend filter lifespan in continuous processing applications.
