Lipid-based formulations are currently trending due to their use in COVID-19 vaccines. Whether as liposomes (spherical phospholipid vesicles with an aqueous core) or lipid nanoparticles (colloidal structures with non-aqueous cores), lipid-based formulations allow safe and efficient delivery of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) that may otherwise be toxic to the patient. At the same time, they improve the stability and distribution of the API to its specific target. But what do formulators need to know as these formulas gain traction in the market?

In this Q&A, Andrew Griffiths, senior specialist at Emergent BioSolutions, discusses the evolution of lipid-based manufacturing, what to know about current manufacturing processes, and how to choose a partner with the right expertise.
