Spray-Dried Dispersions Enable Local Delivery For Lung Cancer
By Kimberly Shepard, Ph.D., Principal Engineer, Research & Development, Lonza Pharma & Biotech
The combination of treatment strategies used for patients suffering from advanced cases of lung cancer can cause a wide range of side effects that make battling this deadly disease even more challenging. Finding a method that prevents additional complications while also improving therapeutic outcomes would be a major step forward in patient care. One approach is to use a locally delivered dry powder inhaler treatment, which offers convenient and non-invasive administration for the patient, lower cost of treatment, and the potential for reduced dose and side effects; however, its success is dependent on particle diameter and density.
Spray drying is a useful particle engineering technique that is able to deliver the particles within the necessary specifications and can therefore be used to manufacture dry powder inhaler treatments. Learning more about spray drying as well as two case studies detailing its success serve as a critical tool in developing innovative and effective cancer therapies.
