SIMS Deltec, Inc
Deltec provides a wide range of infusion therapy products, including ambulatory infusion pumps, large volume infusion pumps, implantable access systems, dialysis and infusion catheters, and needles.
The Company's Purpose
To provide for the delivery and management of drug therapies through innovative and high quality products, support systems and services that optimize patient and provider outcomes.
The Company's History
In the beginning
In 1983, a few adventurous and talented engineers developed
a new way to deliver medication – a Computerized Ambulatory
Drug Delivery device (CADD® pump). They incorporated a
startup company in St. Paul, Minnesota called Deltec Systems, Inc - thus the name "Deltec" which stands for "Delivery Technologies".
At the same time, more than 1,000 miles away, a company called
Nutech in Walpole, Massachusetts designed and manufactured an
implantable vascular access product, called the PORT-A-CATH® system. The new innovative port product was marketed and distributed by Pharmacia Hospital Products of Piscataway, New Jersey.
Discovery of a system
In 1984, Pharmacia Hospital Products heard about a small
company in Minnesota that made a pumping device for the delivery of medication. They realized that the CADD pump and the PORT-A-CATH® system could be marketed as a total ambulatory drug delivery system. They initiated contact with Deltec Systems, Inc. and by late 1984, Deltec had signed an agreement with Pharmacia Hospital Products to distribute the first CADD® pumps.
Merging and relocation
The two progressive products were a natural combination, and
Pharmacia sold them as a system for a short period of time.
It was predictable that the three companies, Deltec, NuTech and
Pharmacia Hospital Products, would merge, and in December of
1986 Pharmacia Deltec, Inc. was formed. By July 1987 all
operations for the newly established company relocated to St. Paul, Minnesota. Pharmacia Deltec, Inc experienced exceptional
brand acceptance and recognition because of the quality and
reliability of its products.
Acquisition
In July of 1994, Smiths Industries Medical Systems (SIMS) purchased Pharmacia Deltec, Inc. and renamed the company SIMS Deltec, Inc. The new owners are a division of Smiths Group plc of the United Kingdom, a company with $4.6 billion in sales and holdings in the industrial, aerospace, medical systems, and sealing solutions industries. In 1998, Smiths Group plc purchased Graseby plc, following which, Graseby Medical, Inc., became part of SIMS Deltec, Inc.
Continual new products and improvements
Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, the company continued
to introduce many outstanding quality products.
In addition to the core pump products -- the CADD-1®, CADD-
PLUS®, and CADD-PCA® pumps, Deltec introduced the CADD-TPN®
pump in 1991, the CADD-Micro® pump in 1993, the CADD-
Prizm® VIP and PCS pumps in 1996, and the CADD-Legacy® pump
in 1999. The company also launched several new
ports and catheters during this same time. We introduced the
P.A.S. PORT® system in 1989, the VENTRA® catheter in 1993,
the PORT-A-CATH® II system in 1995, and the P.A.S. PORT® T2
system in 1999. Many additional new and improved products
have been launched since then and are continually being developed.
