Free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced everyday through normal aerobic processes. For years scientists have struggled to understand free radicals and their implication on living systems. Today we know that naturally occurring antioxidant systems such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and catalase work to counteract the pro-oxidant effects of ROS. Increased ROS production and/or a disruption of these natural systems can result in a state of oxidative stress. That state may be accentuated in response to aging and disease or exposure to environmental toxins. Recent advances in the understanding of free radicals and how they effect health and environmental issues are continuing to fuel research efforts.

OXIS is at the forefront of this research as a leader in providing simple technologies to aid in the understanding of oxidative stress. Among OXIS' key technologies are the Bioxytech® SOD, LPO, NO, and GSH families of assays.

OXIS recognizes the significant amount of work being done relating antioxidant status to biological wellness and disease. In response to the growing need to facilitate and accelerate this research we have introduced OxyScan™, the first fully dedicated, automated system for antioxidant bio-marker analysis. Our goal is to usher in a new era in which these key biomarkers will gain credibility as indicators of physiological and environmental stability.

In addition to the aforementioned technologies, OXIS continues to offer a wide variety of antibodies, enzymes, spin traps, and other products in support of ROS research.
