On July 28, 1999, Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP; Palo Alto, CA) announced the name of its new $7.6-billion diversified technology company—Agilent Technologies (Palo Alto, CA). About Agilent (Back to Top)
Hewlett-Packard Co. announced that it was realigning into two independent companies on March 2, 1999. (See HP To Split Into Two Companies Through Strategic Realignment.) The $40-billion computing and imaging businesses retained the Hewlett-Packard Co. name, while the $8-billion measurement and components businesses formed a new company that is now called Agilent Technologies.

Agilent designs, develops, manufactures, and provides communications components as well as electronic and optical test, measurement, and monitoring instruments, systems, and solutions. The company's customers span industries including chemistry, electronics, communications, semiconductors, healthcare, and life sciences. Agilent has approximately 43,000 employees in more than 40 countries, and will offer its products and services in more than 100 countries.

Agilent will be headquartered in Palo Alto, CA, and will be housed (starting in the spring of 2000) in a new building at 395 Page Mill Road, the site of HP's first manufacturing building, constructed in 1943.

The process for selecting a new name for the company followed interviews and research conducted among the company's scientists, engineers, and managers, as well as consultations with experts in Agilent's key businesses. Landor Associates (San Francisco) helped develop and design Agilent's corporate identity and logo.

According to an HP spokesperson, the Agilent logo (above) was chosen to represent a spark of insight. Agilent's company color is the blue that HP used before it entered the computer and printing businesses. A tag line, "Innovating the HP Way," links Agilent to its origins in HP.
