Merck's primary objective is to reduce the operating costs associated with existing purification steps, particularly those involving high-cost chromatography resins. To address this challenge, the company employed the Resolute® BioSMB multi-column chromatography system as a means to explore improvements in both productivity and operational efficiency when compared to traditional batch-mode purification. This case study aims to demonstrate that a continuous, multi-column approach could not only lower material costs but also streamline the purification process. Performance data collected during the study supported these goals and showed that product yield and quality remained consistent throughout a significant 150-fold scale-up of the process. Moreover, the results were comparable to those achieved using the conventional batch benchmark, which reinforces the potential of the BioSMB system as a viable and cost-effective alternative for large-scale bioprocessing.
