Medicel Explorer is a versatile bioreactor system for the design and execution of complex cell cultivation experiments. Typical applications include the optimization of growth conditions for cell lines and the screening of cell strains for high product yields. Due to its extensive generic functionality the system suits equally well in many emerging applications including toxicology and systems biology. The Explorer core system includes the Cultivation Unit with 15 parallel bioreactors, the Sampling Unit for automated sample withdrawal and the Controlware software application. The Controlware application supports the planning and execution of the cultivation experiments.

Parallel cultivation system with individual parameter control
Medicel Cultivation Unit combines the controlled growth conditions of bioreactors with the parallelism of shake flasks. The Cultivation Unit consists of 15 bioreactors with multiple gas and liquid control modules. Each vessel has individual control over agitation, temperature, aeration, pH, DO and liquid feed. The Cultivation Unit supports bioreactors having an operational cultivation volume of 100 ml to 500 ml. Additional Explorer control modules can be integrated to the Cultivation Unit to provide advanced aeration and liquid control.

Automatic withdrawal and storage of samples
Medicel Sampling Unit enables rapid sampling from the cultivations in the Cultivation Unit. Samples can be taken repeatedly at variable volumes, rates and time intervals as specified in the cultivation program. The transfer of liquid samples from cultivations is performed using a pump or overpressure. The Sampling Unit can be connected to one or multiple conventional benchtop bioreactors for the transfer of cell culture from a larger bioreactor to the smaller bioreactors of the Cultivation Unit for the execution of the planned experiments.

Inline analysis with several optional modules
Explorer modules can be connected to the Cultivation Unit with flexible silicon tubing. Optional automatic analysis modules such as HPLC can be connected to a sample line to provide individual analysis for all cultivations. Measurement of metabolites, exhaust gases, cell count, pH, DO and OD can be measured with optional modules. The Plugflow Unit can be used for second to minute scale perturbations experiments. All system equipments are under a centralized software control.
