Life Technologies Licensing Proprietary Gateway Cloning Technology to Research Genetics

<%=company1%> Inc. (Rockville, MD) has licensed the rights to manufacture primers that incorporate the Gateway Cloning Technology to N/A (Huntsville, AL). Gateway technology enhances the speed and efficiency of directional cloning of PCR products. The Gateway-compatible primers are key tools used in the rapid cloning of genes into a system that greatly facilitates functional analysis.

Life Technologies' commitment to assure availability of Gateway technology led to the establishment of other licensed suppliers, such as Research Genetics. The alliance with Research Genetics also provides a key component for the distribution of Entry Clones and Expression Clones containing Gateway Cloning Technology from a number of model organisms generated by strategic collaborations, such as the IMAGE consortium, the C. elegans ORFeome project, and others.

"The agreement with Research Genetics is an important part of our strategy to promote broad, rapid adoption of our Gateway Cloning Technology," said Derek Woods, vice president of research and development at Life Technologies. "Although already incorporated in a number of Life Technologies GIBCO BRL brand products and systems, Gateway Technology is being commercialized as an open platform with a liberal licensing policy. We foresee the Gateway Cloning Technology becoming the operating system with which clones, vector systems, and the plethora of assay systems are linked. We anticipate that the approach will dramatically affect both basic and applied research."

The Gateway Cloning System was developed in response to the growing need engendered by the genomics revolution for faster, more efficient ways to clone and express DNA sequences. Life Technologies has been granted U.S. Patent 5,888,732 for its Gateway Cloning Technology. Other U.S. and foreign patent applications covering this technology are pending. Based on the well-characterized phage lambda site-specific recombination system, Gateway Cloning Technology provides a highly efficient alternative to the two current conventional cloning and expression methods.

Life Technologies Inc manufactures and markets a breadth of offerings used in applications of the life sciences discovery, development, and production process. The offerings range from catalogue and custom products to technology licensing, research services, large-scale production, and life science technical expertise and support. With operations in more than 20 countries and distributor relationships in more than 40 others, the company serves customers, universities, public and private research institutions, and biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Research Genetics develops, manufactures, and markets products for life sciences research. The company's products and services simplify and improve gene mapping, gene expression analysis, and other genetic techniques that underlie functional genomics and gene based drug discovery.
