Interferon beta, also known as fibroblast interferon, is a type I interferon that has been well characterized, but is not utilized as widely as IFN-a in research or in the clinic. While fibroblasts are the predominant cellular producers of interferon beta, most PBL IFN-b products are recombinant proteins grown up in E. coli. IFN-b has been approved in the U.S. for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. Worldwide, other indications have been approved, such as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.
