Genomic Solutions Inc. (Ann Arbor, MI) has added three new microarrays to its GeneMAP pre-printed microarray product line: GeneMAP Mouse, Rat, and Rat p450. These microarrays, which were developed using Research Genetics' cDNA libraries, are available through the company's early access program. The products will be released for general sale in January 2001.

While currently, the mouse and rat arrays each contain over 1,700 genes, Genomic Solutions has plans to expand the array offerings of these species to contain most of the 5,000 mouse and 17,500 rat genes available in the Research Genetics libraries.

The p450 rat array is an oligonucleotide-based array representing approximately 300 genes. According to a company press release, this array will be an economical alternative to expensive and time consuming protein enzyme assays used in drug compound development.

"Our expanded GeneMAP offerings of mouse and rat cDNA arrays are designed to help 'jump start' researchers' microarray experiments," says Shannon Richey, vice president, Genomic Business Unit at Genomic Solutions. "Many researchers will choose to use these arrays as a screening tool to identify a subset of genes on which to focus additional experiments. Once they have identified this subset, Genomic Solutions can produce custom microarrays of those genes quickly and economically."

GeneMAP arrays provide researchers rapid access to microarray technology while eliminating the time and expense of library management. GeneMAP is one component of the larger, fully integrated GeneTAC Biochip Solution from Genomic Solutions. This automated system enables the user to focus on research results rather than dwelling on technical competencies. The system provides gene expression analysis, DNA library management, microarray production, hybridization, microarray imaging, microarray analysis, and results reporting. Genomic Solutions' in-house laboratories also provide a wide range of genomic research services on a fee-for-service basis.

Each GeneMAP kit includes a pre-printed microarray, a control array and control RNA, comprehensive instruction booklet, gene list, hybridization buffer and Hybridization Station wash solutions. Technical support is readily available. Genomic Solutions also offers classes to help users get the most from the company's product offerings.

Genomic Solutions Inc. designs, develops, manufactures, markets, and sells instruments, software, consumables and services used to determine the activity level of genes and to isolate, identify and characterize proteins.
