Gaertner Scientific was founded in 1896 by William Gaertner. He was a precision instrument maker working for scientists such as A. A. Michealson and A. H. Compton at the University of Chicago.

Subsequently, Gaertner Scientific Corporation has become known throughout the world as a builder of high quality optical instruments. We span numerous application areas with a variety of instruments. Our main product areas are ellipsometers for thin film thickness measurement, modular microscopes for dimensional measurements, as well as other specialized optical instruments.
