Ep. 263, Chapter 1: Introducing Hernan Bazan, M.D., Who Combines Surgery And Biotech Toward Pain Relief
0:00 – 9:35
Life Science Leader Chief Editor Ben Comer interviews Hernan Bazan, M.D., a practicing vascular surgeon at Ochsner Health, as well as co-founder and CEO of South Rampart Pharma. The company is focused on developing SRP-001 — a novel, non-opioid pain treatment.
Dr. Bazan's interest in the intersection of clinical medicine and research began during a two-year research scholarship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he worked under Dr. Ed Berger. During that period, Dr. Berger’s lab discovered the first HIV co-receptor, CXCR4, a pivotal moment in HIV research that revealed the second molecule needed for the virus to enter immune cells, which led to the identification of a second co-receptor, CCR5. Dr. Bazan’s efforts in Dr. Berger’s lab contributed to the understanding of viral tropism, leading the NIH to patent and license his work.
