Dr. Steven L. Nail, Ph.D., Senior Baxter Research Scientist, Pharmaceutical Research and Development with Baxter Healthcare Corporation will present an in-depth course "Advances in Process Analytical Technology in Pharmaceutical Freeze-Drying" on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at 2:00pm at INTERPHEX 2007 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.

In this session, Dr. Nail will detail on PAT in freeze-drying, and include an overview of PAT approaches to the freeze-drying processes, including limitations of current methodology requiring temperature measurement in a few individual vials as well as some technology that has been available for some time, but remains underutilized. Newer technology includes the Smart Freeze Dryer technology and tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) for in-process measurement of mass flow rate.

Dr. Nail is one of the industry's leading lyophilization experts and has more than three decades of experience. He has contributed to the advanced knowledge of the fundamentals, application, and optimization of freeze-dried formulations and processes. He has authored countless articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology and Journal of Thermal Analysis. In 2005, he authored chapters in two books: Stress Testing of Pharmaceuticals and Injectable Dispersed Systems: Formulation, Processing, and Performance. Dr. Nail earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science from Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
