Georges Bret, a laser technology professor at the University of Orsay, France, founded Quantel International in 1975, by simply demonstrating some laser optical head designs. The first product developed was a 10 Hz Nd:YAG laser, providing high performance with an efficient design. In 1990, after considerable growth, Quantel International changed its name to Continuum, the largest manufacturer of pulsed, solid-state ND: YAG lasers. In 1991 the company was purchased by, and became a wholly owned subsidiary of, Hoya Corporation, Tokyo.

At the same time, Continuum furthered its markets into diode pumped technology and the manufacturing of medical lasers. Continuum Biomedical was acquired to provide the base for a leading dermatology business with the Medlite® dermatological laser systems. By this time Continuum had expanded its product offering to a complete range of scientific, medical and industrial products; ND:YAG's (both flashlamp and diode pumped), OPOs (Optical Parametric Oscillators), dye lasers and the LR 262, a fully automatic LCD repair system. The Sunlite™ OPO, an alternative to dye lasers, was introduced in 1994. This same year, Continuum acquired the Optronics division of Hoya, furthering its expansion into the industrial market. Continuum entered the Dental market place in 1995 with the introduction of the DEL 2940 Dental Erbium Laser Hard and Soft Tissue Dental laser system in Japan. In 1998 Continuum introduced its second-generation system, DELight™ (Dental Erbium Laser) and began clinical studies in the United States. In October of 1999 Continuum was granted FDA clearance for hard and soft tissue application in adults and children for all classes of caries removal and cavity preparation. Today Continuum markets the third generation Delight™ and has reached over 1,000 dental placements worldwide. 2000 sees Continuum as a leader in pulsed laser technology, with proven, reliable products.
