CHT ceramic hydroxyapatite is a spherical, macroporous form of hydroxyapatite that overcomes the limitations of the crystalline material and allows use in industrial-scale columns. Separation protocols originally developed on crystalline hydroxyapatite can be transferred directly to the ceramic material with little or no modification. CHT ceramic hydroxyapatite retains the unique separation properties of crystalline hydroxyapatite, but can be used reproducibly for several hundred cycles at high flow rates and in large columns.

CHT ceramic hydroxyapatite Type I and Type II have elution characteristics similar to those of crystalline hydroxyapatite, but with important differences. Type I has a high protein binding capacity (>25 mg of lysozyme/g) and higher capacity for acidic proteins. Type II has a lower protein binding capacity (>12.5 mg of lysozyme/g) and gives better resolution of proteins eluting early, and of nucleic acids. Type II has very low affinity for albumin, so it is often more suitable than Type I for purification of many species and classes of immunoglobulins. The three particle sizes, 20, 40, and 80 µm, make it easy to scale up from analytical to preparative and production scales. Prepacked CHT Bio-Scale Mini columns are available in 5 ml format for streamlining method development.
