Biolog, Inc. was founded by Barry Bochner, Ph.D. and Donald Barnby and began operations in 1984. It was financed with private investments and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Energy (DOE), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Our Mission

The mission of the company is to develop, manufacture and sell products for use in microbiology testing environments. The result has been the development of a unique system that allows the user to characterize and identify a large number of bacteria, yeast and fungi. The system currently identifies over 1400 species, covering virtually all human, animal and important plant pathogens, as well as a large number of environmental microorganisms. In 1991, Biolog, Inc. was a recipient of the "R&D 100 Award" for developing one of the best technological products in the world.

In addition to its MicroLog 1, 2, 3, and 3E series of identification systems, Biolog has broadened its product portfolio with other unique microbiology products. This includes the most recent introduction of the Rainbow® line of culture media. This innovative line of products utilizes novel chromogenic and selection chemistries, along with simple spot tests, to assist the microbiologist in rapid isolation and identification of important bacterial species.

The company sells worldwide both direct and through distribution. The target markets for our products include: clinical, veterinary, agricultural, pharmaceutical, environmental, industrial quality control, biotechnology, cosmetics, food, water, chemical, bioremediation, government, ecology, marine/aquaculture, biological control, research, and education.
