Bio-Rad Patents Plasmid Purification Process, Bead Preparation Technique

HERCULES, CA, September 19, 2002 -- Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. has been granted two U.S. patents, one pertaining to CHT ceramic hydroxyapatite media and the second to UNOsphere ion exchange media.

U.S. patent 6,406,892 covers Bio-Rad¹s novel, single-step method for purifying plasmid DNA on hydroxyapatite, saving time and effort. The acetate-free method utilizes a modified alkaline lysis procedure to allow direct loading of the clarified lysate to CHT ceramic hydroxyapatite. Sample preparation and other handling steps are eliminated.

U.S. patent 6,423,666 was granted to Bio-Rad in collaboration with Dr. Stellan Hjerten for the preparation of large-pore chromatographic beads prepared by suspension polymerization. Bio-Rad manufactures its popular UNOsphere S and Q ion exchange media using this technology.

Bio-Rad offers a broad range of ISO-9001 certified process chromatography products. The company began selling chromatography media in 1958, and has grown to be the world's second largest provider of process chromatography media and equipment.
