Amersham Pharmacia Biotech (Piscataway, NJ) has launched two new tools for protein expression analysis and identification—Ettan DALT II and Ettan Spot Picker. Both products are intended for drug discovery applications and can be integrated with all other APBiotech proteomics platforms.

According to the company, the Ettan DALT II system for two-dimensional (2D) electrophoresis, used to separate protein mixtures from biological samples, is the highest capacity unit available on the market and provides reliable, reproducible and quantifiable protein profiling. The automated Ettan Spot Picker automatically transfers selected protein spots separated on the 2D electrophoresis gels to microplates for mass spectrometry identification.

The two new products join APBiotech's portfolio of proteomics products, including the Ettan MALDI-ToF mass spectrometer. All the products will be fully integrated into a 2D-MS system next year.

"With our Ettan design platform, integrated system solutions are being developed to increase sensitivity and raise throughput," Mats Johnson, APBiotech's VP of proteomics, commented in a company release."With the integrated system, it will be possible to track each protein sample through the many steps involved in proteomics."

Amersham Pharmacia Biotech, the life sciences business of Nycomed Amersham plc, is a provider of biotechnology systems, products, and services for research into genes and proteins, for the discovery and development of drugs, and for the manufacture of biopharmaceuticals.
