Finding Fermentation Contaminants Faster With Fluorescence-Based Rapid Microbial Detection

Traditional bioburden testing can take several days to show visible colonies. Earlier detection makes it possible to address fermentation contamination events sooner, avoiding reactor shutdowns and downstream problems.

The Milliflex® Quantum system can quantitatively detect microbial contamination in filterable samples up to three times faster than traditional plate-based monitoring methods. Fluorescent labeling of all viable microorganisms illuminates emerging microcolonies that are still too small to detect with the naked eye. The results are comparable to the compendial method, making validation and implementation faster and easier. In addition, the fluorescent stain is non-destructive, allowing reincubation and subsequent identification in the event of a positive result.

The Milliflex® Quantum system fits on any lab bench, is easy to use, and requires only minimal training. Membrane filtration is a tried and true technology that can be applied on a wide variety of complex sample types. This application note available for download describes how the Milliflex® Quantum successfully tests complex samples such as mammalian cell culture, enzyme-treated sample, powdered media containing iron supplement, alkaline reagent, and a healthcare product containing a quaternary ammonium antimicrobial agent.
