The KAHLSICO No. 215WA305 STREAM-BED FAUNA SAMPLER overcomes most of the difficulties encountered with the Surber model
The KAHLSICO No. 215WA305 STREAM-BED FAUNA SAMPLER overcomes most of the difficulties encountered with the Surber model; it is an improved version of the circular samplers described by Hess and Waters. The KAHLSICO Fauna Sampler is readily portable, ruggedly constructed and not easily bent in handling. It can quickly be anchored firmly into the river bottom, its circular frame, covered with plankton netting, prevents animals from crawling out while floating insects, debris, etc. cannot enter the net. Fast-moving waters do not erode the sediment from under the deeply imbedded metal base, preventing a loss of sample; crawling organisms, etc. cannot enter the area being investigated. Also, gusty winds cannot readily move the device. Its modern design assures reliable and repeatable collections for both quantitative and qualitative analyses. This instrument may be used to collect eggs, larvae and adult crustacean insects, fish, etc., as well as aquatic plants for ecology, forage, population, predator and other field studies. Its circular shape covers an area of approximately 0.1 square meter (1 sq ft) and it has wide, heavy gauge stainless-steel sheet metal cylinders at the top and the base. Two vertically attached rods, fitted into receptacles on the cylinders, serve as handles for pushing the base deeply into the river-bed for rigid and firm positioning. The collapsible device may easily and quickly be erected for use by inserting the bars into the welded receptacle fittings on the metal cylinders; attached shock-cords keep the frame with net under tension and prevent sagging.
