SmartArray arrays on glass slides genes that are functionally related and involved in the same regulatory pathway. SmartSet 1, the hormone receptor array, contains an exhaustive list of nuclear hormone receptors (NHR) known to regulate gene expression, a growing list of transcriptional co-regulators, which can function either as co-activators or inhibitors of expression, and an expanding group of secondary co-regulators which either acetylate or deacetylate the chromatin, ultimately, either upregulating or downregulating expression of specific genes.

Unique 350-500 base pair amplified fragments of each gene are spotted in duplicate. Experiments probing with both total and polyA+ RNA showed that the arrays can be used with any type of probe to detect messages present even in low abundance.
