Kainic acid is extracted from a red alga, Digeneasimplex. In the past, it has been used as an antihelmintic, but now is generally used for neurobiological research. It exhibits neurotoxic activity and has been used in epilepsy research. Kainic acid has been used to induce seizures and neurodegeneration in vivo in mice and rats.
