In pharmaceutical research, predicting drug-induced kidney toxicity and potential drug-drug interactions remains a formidable obstacle. This challenge persists due to the reliance on models that do not accurately translate to human responses. Conventional models such as conditionally immortalized proximal tubule epithelial cell lines (ciPTEC) or transgenic mice frequently fall short in predicting clinical toxicity, as they lack crucial transporters and biomarkers necessary for human relevance.

The Emulate Kidney-Chip recreates the interface between the proximal tubule and peritubular capillary, employing primary human cells within a dynamic microenvironment. This fosters the expression and localization of transporters in a manner more akin to human physiology. Its applications include preclinical toxicity testing of drug candidates across a broad spectrum of endpoints.
