We have developed a novel automated multi-vessel cultivation system, the Medicel Cultivation Unit. A central feature of the Cultivation Unit is that the individual cultivation vessels are connected with pinch valves to a common tubing line for sampling. The common tubing line enables automatic sample collection from the Cultivation Unit to the Medicel Sampling Unit. Simultaneously, one piece of analytical equipment mounted in the common sampling line, the Medicel Analysis module, can be used to monitor the cultivations in each Cultivation Unit vessel. Here we show that the cultivation monitoring of pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, and optical density can be conducted with the probes mounted in the flow-through chambers in the Medicel Analysis module.
