Diphtheria toxin is a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis thru the ADP-ribosylation of EF-2. Eukaryotic cell lines carring toxin receptor, HB-EGF precursor, are sensitive to this toxin. Diphtheria toxin and toxoid are supplied as sterile lyophilized powders, stoppered under vacuum. CRM197 is a nontoxic diphtheria toxin that has a mutation in fragment A. Immunologically, the CRM197 is identical to the toxin.
